Newman-Crows Landing Unified reports midyear LCAP gains; math and absenteeism remain priorities

Mrs. Vargas presented the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) midyear update to the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District board on Feb. 10, summarizing academic, attendance and program metrics for the three-year cycle adopted in May.
The midyear report showed that 64.2% of students met UC/CSU readiness requirements, Advanced Placement course enrollment rose to 19% (against a three-year target of 25%) and AP exam success improved to 74%. Chronic absenteeism declined from 14.7% at the start of the cycle to 9.9%, and overall attendance improved to 93.6%.
"So tonight, we're just doing the LCAP midyear report," Mrs. Vargas said in presenting the data. She told the board the district continues to focus on targeted math interventions, expanded support for English learners and students with disabilities, and comprehensive professional development to align site goals.
The report noted career and technical education (CTE) pathway completion at 23% and continued investments in pathways in health care, technology and education. The district's dual language immersion enrollment exceeded its goal with 546 students, and 44 students received the state's seal of biliteracy. Suspension rates declined to 3.7% and the expulsion rate was 0.2%; facilities inspections averaged a 96% rating on the FIT report.
Vargas emphasized that CAASPP math proficiency remains an area for improvement despite other indicators of college and career readiness. She also said FAFSA completion activities were beginning at the high school and that a final FAFSA completion rate was not yet available.
Board members did not take formal action on the LCAP at the meeting; Vargas said the district will update the board again as it prepares the LCAP for May.
The board packet lists next steps including implementing targeted math intervention, enhancing supports for English learners and students with disabilities, and continuing chronic absenteeism reduction efforts.
