Solon Board awards $2.7 million contract to restore high school natatorium

Board members approved the contract after district staff described why the work is needed and what it will cover: coatings and structural work for the pool roof to address corrosion from pool chloramines, an upgraded lighting system for the dive well, and related measures to bring the roof and associated infrastructure to safe standards.
Staff said the $2.7 million winning bid was several hundred thousand dollars under the project’s estimated budget. The presenter explained that pool environments require specialty coatings because chloramines — off-gassing byproducts of chlorine — are corrosive and necessitate specialized tonemic paint systems. The project also will update lighting in the dive well to match prior upgrades to the main pool area and follow earlier HVAC improvements.
The board’s motion authorized awarding the contract to the lowest responsible bidder and the item passed on a roll-call vote with the typical board members voting in favor. District staff said prior HVAC work is complete and this contract will address the roof and related safety upgrades so the natatorium can be used going forward.
No additional financing details were provided during the presentation; the board approved the award and directed staff to proceed with contracting.
