The coordinator said Latino students are the district's largest marginalized group and estimated the population at about 35 percent of district enrollment (roughly 3,000 students), and described a recent outreach event in partnership with Linn‑Benton Community College that included targeted phone calls to families and on‑site services and child care. The coordinator said turnout at the event was strong and that families asked follow‑up questions; staff said the outreach emphasized that schools are safe places and that district staff are available to support families.
On bias incidents, the coordinator said the district tracked roughly 436 bias incidents last year and that an uptick in recent weeks may raise the quarterly total; she said higher reporting can reflect both increased occurrences and increased willingness of students, staff and families to report incidents. The coordinator told the board she is strengthening administrator training on responding to bias incidents, running practice sessions (fishbowl role plays) and building capacity so principals can manage difficult conversations without outside support.
The coordinator said she is partnering with regional organizations and school districts to implement a grant aimed at Black student success, with activities planned across the region to bolster academic supports, parent engagement and community programming; the grant application was submitted collaboratively with other districts and community partners and was awarded.
Board members asked about trends and whether reporting systems capture perpetrators and victims consistently; the coordinator said the district will improve data tagging to ensure more consistent categorization and will continue regular reporting to the board.
