Superintendent briefs board on financial and HR quarterly reports, registration windows and small fire at East Paulding High

Paulding County Schools’ superintendent reported on quarterly financial and human-resources updates, registration and recruiting events and a small, contained fire at East Paulding High School during the Feb. 11 board meeting.
Business Services’ December 2024 quarterly financial report (attached to the meeting agenda) showed the general fund’s year-to-date revenue variance at about 11% compared with 15.3% at the same point last year, and expenditures variance at about 1.2% compared with 1.8% last year. The superintendent said the district’s unassigned fund balance could support roughly three months of budgeted expenditures in December, compared with about three and a half months last year, and reminded the board the balance typically declines toward September.
Human Resources’ quarterly report (also attached to the agenda) showed an overall vacancy rate of 2.7% for the second quarter, roughly in line with the first quarter (2.4%) and better than the prior three fiscal years at the same point. The substitute fill rate was reported at about 95% after the district added roughly 280 individuals to its substitute list since the school year began.
Staff also said kindergarten registration for the 2025–26 school year is open, the school-choice window remains open through Feb. 14 and the teacher career fair will be March 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at P.B. Rich Middle School; a classified job fair was noted for the summer.
On campus safety, the superintendent reported that a small fire started in the ceiling of the auditorium lobby at East Paulding High School the prior night and was extinguished by the fire department around 9:30 p.m. The fire was contained to the lobby; the auxiliary gym and theater remain available and school operations returned to normal. The cause is under investigation; the superintendent said it is not believed to involve foul play, and the district is working with GSB on claims and will cooperate with the fire marshal’s office.
Why it matters: financial trends and HR metrics inform budget and staffing decisions for the district; registration and hiring windows affect enrollment and staffing for the coming year. The quick fire response limited operational impact at East Paulding High School but the district said it will continue to investigate the cause.
The superintendent invited further questions and noted Business Services and HR will host breakout sessions following the March 4 board work session for any board follow-up.
