Committee votes to send $35,000 fire turnout-gear grant to full council

The Lawrence City Budget and Finance Committee voted to send item 39-24 to the full City Council with a favorable recommendation to accept and expend a $35,000 Department of Fire Services (DFS) Safety and Equipment Grant to purchase firefighter turnout gear.
Fire Chief Moriarty told the committee the grant is “$35,000 There’s no match and we’re using it to buy turnout gear.” He added the department replaces gear regularly: “It wears out. … it has a life expectancy. … So as we progress in time, we end up getting new gear. So this will go towards new gear this year.”
Moriarty also said the award was delayed this year while state-level distribution was pending and offered a brief account of that delay: “It was a little delayed this year because the governor was trying to get everybody in this commonwealth to go along with their m m, housing plan near the train station, so she held it up for a few other towns. Ours was not 1 of them that was out of compliance. We went in compliance when we finally got it.”
A committee member moved to send the item to the full council with a favorable recommendation; the motion was seconded and approved in committee by voice vote. The committee record shows the item will proceed to the full Council for final approval.
Chief Moriarty said he has a prior commitment for the full-council meeting and will send a deputy in his place to answer questions there.
