House appoints conferees for several bills, receives Senate communications and announces committee meeting schedule
Summary
Following supplemental calendar actions, the House of Delegates agreed to multiple conference requests, appointed conferees for budget and policy bills, and announced committee meeting times for later that day and the following morning.
After acting on the supplemental calendar on Feb. 12, the House of Delegates received multiple communications from the Senate indicating that the Senate had rejected some House amendments and insisted on its own amendments for other measures. The House moved to insist on its amendments for Senate bills SB1060 and SB1082 and to request conferences; those motions were agreed to on the floor.
The House also acceded to the Senate’s request for committees of conference on House Bill 1600 (the budget bill) and House Bill 1946 (possession of tobacco/hemp by persons under 21). The presiding officer announced that the House conferees for HB1600 are Delegates Torian (chair), Sickles (vice chair), Bulova, Carr, Austin, and Bloxham. For HB1946 the conferees announced were Delegates Hope, Seibold, and Austin. For the companion Senate bill SB1060 and SB1082, the House named Delegates Hope, Seibold, and Austin for SB1060 and Delegates Torian, Kreesick, and Austin for SB1082 (as announced on the floor).
The clerk also announced committee meeting changes and times for the afternoon and the next morning, including Appropriations, Commerce, Agriculture and Natural Resources meeting 15 minutes after adjournment on the Twelfth Floor; Courts of Justice Criminal Subcommittee meeting 45 minutes after the Senate courts meeting begins; Transportation Innovation Ad Hoc Subcommittee meeting immediately upon adjournment; and a slate of other caucus and committee meetings starting the next morning. The House voted to adjourn and reconvene the following day at noon.
These procedural steps set the schedule for negotiations and committee work needed to finish session business before statutory deadlines.
