County consultants find speeding, run-off-road crashes driving most serious collisions

Doña Ana County officials on Feb. 11 presented findings from a comprehensive roadway safety action plan that identified excessive speeding and a high rate of run-off-road crashes as leading contributors to serious injuries and fatalities on county roads.

The report — summarized at the Board of County Commissioners meeting by Anita Skipper, Doña Ana County’s chief public information officer — reflected 450 pieces of public input gathered from residents across the county. Consultants from Bohannon Houston and Tool Design discussed the study and said they will continue public outreach with an information booth at New Mexico State University on Feb. 12 in the Corbett Center lobby from noon to 2 p.m.

Why it matters: the study targets reductions in fatalities and serious injuries by identifying high-risk behaviors and locations, and by recommending engineering, enforcement and education steps tailored to County roads.

The consultants’ findings, as relayed in the meeting recap, highlighted three patterns: excessive speeding is widespread across Doña Ana County, most crashes occur on days without adverse weather, and run-off-road collisions — including collisions with fixed objects and other vehicles — occur at high rates. The report paired those findings with recommended countermeasures and further community outreach.

Next steps announced at the meeting included continued public engagement and the consultant-hosted NMSU booth to share study results in person. No formal board action or vote on the plan was recorded in the meeting recap.
