The Simsbury Open Space Committee agreed Feb. 5 to begin preparing documentation to nominate Schultz Park as a Level I arboretum and asked staff to assist with an application to ARBNet.
Marjorie said Schultz Park already appears to meet the Level I requirement of documenting 25 different tree species and noted the town has multiple trees listed in Connecticut's notable-tree database, including a champion weeping Norway spruce in Schultz Park.
Committee members discussed assembling species lists, stewardship plans (including replacing lost species with natives), and public-education elements such as kiosks or QR-code links. One member suggested asking Susan, when she has time, to begin the paperwork; committee members agreed to ask staff to prepare an application packet for the Board of Selectmen to consider and, if approved, to submit to ARBNet.
The committee did not vote on the nomination at the meeting but agreed informally to move forward with documentation and to involve volunteers and Michelle Jenks, who has been active on tree documentation in town. Members suggested the nomination could support school curriculum and public engagement.
