Board and superintendent reaffirm district commitment to safe, inclusive schools amid federal policy uncertainty

Superintendent Dr. Udo reminded the board and community of Tigard‑Tualatin School District’s commitment to equity and to maintaining schools as safe, welcoming places for students regardless of immigration status.

"TTSD will continue to stand as a place of belonging and protection for all students, regardless of their background or immigration status," Dr. Udo said, urging the board to reaffirm the district’s sanctuary commitments as federal immigration policy changes loom.

Dr. Udo noted the district’s prior action in 2017 to declare TTSD a sanctuary district and cited state law, naming HB 3265 as an Oregon statute that limits collaboration with federal immigration enforcement. The superintendent said the district’s policies and state law aim to reduce fear and barriers that can affect student learning.

Board members — including Director Crystal Weston, Director Kristin Miles and Vice Chair David Jaime — expressed support for reaffirming the district’s stance. Director Weston referenced "Resolution 24‑25‑06" as a reaffirmation of the district’s commitments and said the board will follow adopted district policies and state and federal law. Several members emphasized the moral and ethical dimensions of protecting students.
