School board approves GMPs for transformer relocation, ceiling panels and tank replacements

The Marion County School Board voted unanimously Feb. 11 to approve three construction guaranteed maximum price (GMP) items intended to resolve safety and maintenance issues at district campuses.
Fort McCoy School: The board approved a GMP to replace and relocate interior transformers that the district said were producing excessive heat. District staff told the board the school, built in 1987, has transformers installed inside small electrical rooms with inadequate cooling; the project will move transformers to outdoor pads to improve cooling and extend equipment life. District staff estimated the project cost "just over, about $1,000,000," and said material lead time for the transformers is about five months; construction is planned to begin June 2 with substantial completion by July 31.
Prototype schools ceiling liner panels: The board approved installation of ceiling liner panels at Ocala Springs, College Park and Dunnellon Elementary schools to secure deteriorated insulation that was previously held in place with chicken wire. District staff said the work — intended to protect insulation from falling and to reduce opportunities for nesting by birds or rodents — will begin March 3 with an eight-week material procurement window and substantial completion July 31. A district representative said the visible insulation deterioration is limited to the prototype schools; other campuses already have the panels.
Hydropneumatic tanks replacement: The board approved replacement of district hydropneumatic tanks at several campuses to comply with a Department of Environmental Protection report that found tanks in poor condition. Schools listed for replacement include Shady Hill, Harborview, Ocala Springs and Reddick Collier. Staff said procurement lead time is about 20 weeks; work is scheduled to start June 2 with completion targeted for July 31.
Board members asked staff about staging and coordination to avoid service disruptions; district staff said schedules will be coordinated with each school and that they will avoid shutdowns during operational times. All three GMP approvals passed by unanimous voice vote.
