Fulton educators propose new energy-focused STEM course for grades 11–12

Two Fulton high school educators proposed a new interdisciplinary course that would combine science and technology content focused on energy, sustainability and hands‑on projects.
Dan Mandel and Francis Severs, introduced at the Board of Education meeting as the presenters for new course approvals, told the board the class would target 11th- and 12th-grade students, award one credit per year, and be structured so students rotate between the two teachers every five weeks. Mandel said the design aims to pair classroom content with applied, project-based work to build student portfolios and expose students to careers in renewable energy, electrical trades and related fields. "Why don't we start pointing kids in a direction to get into some of these fields?" Mandel said.
The presenters described the course as a hybrid of lecture and hands‑on work. Severs said the schedule — frequent teacher changes and five-week modules — would keep instruction fresh, allow data-driven interventions and let students choose capstone projects in the fourth marking period. Possible projects suggested included an "off-grid cabin" design where students would analyze materials, load and sustainability over a defined period. The instructors said many materials and some lab equipment already exist in district facilities; additional costs would be limited to measuring equipment and consumable materials. They also noted community contacts and local companies have expressed interest in supporting the program.
Board members asked about pathways, credits and student interest. Presenters said the course could count toward science or technology Carnegie credits depending on a student’s focus and that it might be adaptable for dual-enrollment later, though they cautioned that possibility was not finalized. Mandel and Severs said they expect strong student interest and that the pilot year would be used to tune curriculum and workload.
The proposal also closed a historical loop: Severs said a similar energy class existed about a decade earlier and drew a diverse group of students. The board’s superintendent and other members praised the cross-disciplinary approach and noted the district’s evolving "portrait of a graduate" expectations, including capstone projects and civic readiness. The presentation concluded with invitations for the board to follow future student presentations and capstones if the course proceeds through the formal approval process.
The board did not vote on course approval during the presentation; presenters asked the administration and board to consider the pilot concept for future action.
