Board approves three construction and safety contracts including South High track replacement; one trustee recused

LARAMIE, Wyo. — At its regular meeting the Laramie County School District #1 Board of Trustees approved three vendor contracts covering fire‑alarm and lighting upgrades, a boiler replacement at Aplaba Elementary and a track and field replacement at South High School.

The board approved a combined fire‑alarm and lighting package with Simpson Electric (not to exceed $694,657) and Quality Electric (not to exceed $125,560) for work at multiple sites, including a lighting upgrade at Alta Vista. Trustee Burton recused from the vote, citing a conflict of interest; the board approved the motion by voice vote with the recusal noted in the record.

Trustees then approved a contract with Mechanical Systems Incorporated for a boiler replacement at Aplaba Elementary in an amount not to exceed $355,839, plus a 10% contingency. Later the board approved a bid from LER Inc. d/b/a Renner Sports Services for a South High School track and turf replacement at a total not‑to‑exceed amount of $1,155,496 (broken down in the motion by major‑maintenance and other funding sources), including a 10% contingency.

Board members did not request roll‑call tallies; motions carried by voice vote or general assent as recorded in the public minutes. No member spoke against any of the contracts on the record after discussion; Trustee Burton stepped aside for the Simpson Electric/Quality Electric motion and did not participate in that vote.

The contracts are routine capital maintenance and replacement projects identified in the district’s facility plans. District staff said South High’s turf replacement follows a roughly 10‑year lifecycle for artificial turf and that the site was next in line for replacement.
