Public commenter urges school-bus safety changes, notes nurse coverage concern

During the public-comment portion of the Feb. 10 meeting, resident Michael Mysiak urged the Moore County Schools Board of Education to reconsider policies that require students to cross in front of school buses at drop-off points and highlighted nurse staffing coverage.

"How much is even one child's life worth?" Mysiak said, referring to a fatal crash he recalled from another district about 15 years ago in which a girl walking in front of a bus was struck and killed. He said the bus-pickup image used in a pilot haunts him and asked the district to consider changing drop-off logistics so children would not need to cross in front of a stopped bus.

Mysiak also noted concern about school-nurse staffing: "There was one nurse who served three different schools," he said, asking the board to consider whether that level of coverage is adequate. The board did not take action on the comment during the meeting; comments were entered into the public record for possible follow-up by staff and board committees.

Board members did not respond substantively in the meeting transcript beyond thanking the commenter; no immediate policy direction or vote was recorded in the minutes regarding bus loading/unloading policy or nurse staffing levels.
