Scrap Gallery plans Butterfly Festival March 15 and Earth Day Spring Fest, focusing on monarchs and pollinators

Karen Riley, executive director of the Scrap Gallery, told the Parks and Community Events Commission that the gallery will host its fourth annual Butterfly Festival on Saturday, March 15, 2025, and a Spring Fest/Earth Day event in April focused on pollinator education and activities for families.
Riley said the Butterfly Festival will emphasize monarch conservation and will distribute milkweed and wildflower seedling “cells” for attendees to plant at home. “We will be doing milkweed and wildflower seedlings... We have already have about 400 cells going right now, which will be at the Butterfly Festival for kids and parents to take back,” Riley said. The festival will include environmental exhibits, a moth station, an international environmental art contest with entries from the United States, Canada and Mexico, and distribution of the book The Truth About Butterflies.
Riley cited recent monarch survey data: “They did the count for the western monarch, and it was less than 10,000… It's about 95% down from 1980 totals,” and said the events will focus on ways residents can help pollinators. The Spring Fest in April will include a 6K, a bee‑focused art contest and projects by a Sunny Sands elementary third‑grade sustainability group; the gallery plans to coordinate with the library on giveaways and with schools on approved flyer distribution.
The Scrap Gallery will send mailings to the community ahead of each event and a targeted mailer five days before each festival. Riley said partners and sponsors include the Rotary (which will provide advertising on an I‑10 electronic billboard) and the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge; she said the mayor will sign a proclamation and the city will participate in the pledge at Spring Fest.
Riley asked for commissioner participation and volunteers; staff said approved flyer distribution to schools requires the city's stamp. The commission took no formal action; staff will publicize details and coordinate logistics with communications and events staff.
