District 28 elects Quentin Madison president, Lauren Clavin first vice president

Quentin Madison was elected president of Community Education Council District 28 at the council’s annual meeting on Jan. 8, winning a roll-call vote after a short nomination and speech period. Lauren Clavin was later elected first vice president after a contested roll-call vote and a second round following an initial split ballot.
The election filled vacancies left after the resignation of the council’s previous president. Ntifa Lewis, serving as chair pro tem, ran the nominations and the roll-call process required by the council’s bylaws. Madison delivered a two-minute statement before the vote and accepted the nomination; Clavin and Gurumoothi “GK” Kalyanram each gave two-minute statements when they were nominated for first vice president.
Madison, who identified himself as a longtime council member who has served as first vice president and as a D75 representative, said he would focus on “service, accountability, and action.” “As president, I will ensure that our district continues to break barriers, embrace innovation, and work collaboratively to uplift all of our students, parents, and educators,” Madison said in his remarks.
The first vice president race required two rounds of voting. After an initial roll call produced six votes for Clavin and four for GK, council members moved to hold a second roll-call vote. The council then recorded the result and announced Clavin as the new first vice president for the remainder of the 2024–25 school year. In her remarks, Clavin said she would work to “help other parents access the resources they need to help their children thrive” and to “champion policies that prioritize equity, support our teachers, and protect our public schools.”
The council followed its bylaws for nominations, statements and roll-call voting. Chair pro tem Ntifa Lewis read the procedure at the start of the annual meeting, including the requirement that a candidate must receive seven votes to be elected; the transcript records the roll-call votes by member name for each ballot.
The newly elected officers will serve for the remainder of the 2024–25 school year. The council moved on after the officers’ elections to the superintendent’s report and a presentation from the School Construction Authority, among other agenda items.
