Zoning Administrator George Schroeder approved a special development permit Feb. 12 to allow on-site, on-sale general alcoholic beverage service — including on-site consumption at a restaurant with a covered, outdoor patio — at 240 South Tafe Street, Suite J 134 in Sunnyvale (planning file PLNG20240584).
The permit was approved as “alternative 1,” adopting the recommended conditions of approval and attachment 3. Schroeder said, “I support the project that can make the required findings. So I will go ahead and take action on alternative 1, which is to approve the special development permit with recommended conditions of approval and attachment 3. And my my, approval can be appealed within 15 calendar days to the planning commission.”
The project applicant, Sonny Tam of Studio COD Architects, told the hearing he was available to answer design questions and said of the applicant and owner, “I appreciate staff, help on this design. We we find it a couple of times, and I think this is something that the city would, be pleased with. And also, the restaurant owner is very happy with it. And, he's very excited to, join Sunnyvale, in some new business.”
Planning staff provided no staff report at the hearing. Schroeder opened a public hearing for comments; staff reported there were no members of the public who raised their hands or called in to speak. After hearing from the applicant and noting the absence of public comment, Schroeder closed the public hearing and issued the approval.
The approval can be appealed to the Sunnyvale Planning Commission within 15 calendar days of the decision, per the notice at the hearing. The conditions of approval referenced an attachment labeled “attachment 3,” which the zoning administrator said were included with the staff materials; the content of those conditions was not read into the record at the hearing.
This item was identified on the agenda as a special development permit (SDP) for an on-site on-sale general alcoholic beverage service at the address listed under planning file PLNG20240584. No formal vote tally beyond the zoning administrator’s ruling was recorded in the transcript.
