Most prominently, the Senate adopted House Joint Resolution 33 honoring Riley Gaines by a recorded vote of 46-5 (see separate article for debate excerpts). Leader Johnson moved and the body adopted Senate Joint Resolution 140 providing for a recess on Presidents’ Day (motion carried without recorded roll call). The Senate also suspended rules to take up House Joint Resolution 64 for immediate consideration, a resolution honoring Macon County High School’s football team; the motion to suspend was agreed to on voice vote.
Senator Yeager moved to send Senate Joint Resolution 60, which honored Michael Timmy (decedent), back to committee to be reworked as a memorial resolution; the Senate agreed and the item was referred to committee. Chairman Massey announced the Transportation and Safety Committee will accept amendments to omnibus license plate and highway road-naming bills with a deadline of March 6 and advised members to find a house sponsor for companion measures. Massey also noted a meeting at 10:30 a.m. with TDOT regional directors about hurricane Helene recovery efforts.
At the close of the regular business, Leader Johnson moved adjournment; the Senate stood adjourned until 8:30 a.m. Thursday next.
