Sherry Hewlett, Elbert County public trustee, presented the office’s fourth-quarter report to the county commissioners on Jan. 22 and said excess funds from the public trustee account would be transferred to the general fund.

She said a statutory change effective July 1, 2024 doubled public trustee fees across Colorado; the change was intended to help smaller counties whose public-trustee offices rely on fees tied to foreclosure and deed-of-trust activity.
Hewlett explained the public trustee office is self-funded and that many fees collected are passed through to other parties; she said Elbert County has not faced the staffing/funding problems that smaller counties sometimes face. She offered to meet with new commissioners to explain the office’s revenue and fee structure in greater detail.
Commissioners moved to approve the fourth-quarter 2024 public trustee report as presented; the motion passed by voice vote.
