Board hears progress report on April 2024 bond projects; tracks, roofs and HVAC work underway

St. Joseph School District staff gave the board a status update on projects funded by the April 2024 bond, saying multiple construction and upgrade efforts are currently under way.
Doctor Segars (district operations) told the board athletic-field track work is progressing at three sites: Benton, Central and Lafayette. He said Benton and Central tracks have been stripped and dirt-moving has begun; Lafayette's track stripping and site work are similarly underway. At Hozia, the roof is complete and HVAC units have been set; staff said Hozia is on schedule for an early-April completion.
Road and sidewalk projects also advanced: work at Carden Park is in progress and two sidewalk projects (Pickett and Parkway) were approved at the prior board meeting and will begin soon. The survey for Spring Garden is complete. Staff said intercom system installs are delayed while the district awaits shipments of servers; installation timelines will proceed once equipment arrives. Fine-arts upgrades at Lafayette are nearly complete (stage finished, flooring, painting and plaster remain) and elementary curtain installs have begun at Ellison and Coleman.
On HVAC, staff said they met with contractor Schneider and plan to start with Rubidoux as the first project this summer; a contract from Schneider is expected at the February board meeting. The district noted the bond will not cover HVAC replacement at every school and staff will explore combining bond funds with capital improvement program (CIP) funds for additional work.
Staff also described professional development and science/technology upgrades tied to the bond: teacher training for algebra tiles and AV system training for elementary specialist teachers were under way. The board asked operational questions about track practice, alternative sites while construction is under way, and where Daikin units remain installed (Edison, Field, Mark Twain, Pershing, Spring Garden). No formal board action was taken at the work session; the report was informational.
