Council previews retreat agenda focused on processes, subcommittees and communications

Council President Kris Kritzer and Council Vice President Forsyth presented a draft agenda for an upcoming full-day council retreat designed to clarify internal processes and prioritize policy work for the year.
The retreat is slated as a Saturday session running roughly 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include an opening icebreaker, a review of the council—s policy-hopper submission form and prioritization process, a check-in on recently formed subcommittees, a discussion about the legislative coordinator and ombudsperson roles, and a session on council communications and emergency protocols.
"One of the big questions that we hope to answer within this section is, you know, we have the policy list we generate at the retreat. We have things that come through the hopper. We have other parking lot items. And how do we kind of bring those together and prioritize them throughout the course of the year?" Kritzer said.
Councilmembers asked for preparatory materials to be centralized. Councilmember Stewart requested a single SharePoint folder with the latest documents, specifically calling out a current version of the council—s policy-priority list. Kritzer committed to compiling and distributing an updated package in advance of the retreat so members can prepare.
Other items previewed for the retreat included a discussion of leadership role distribution among council members, a prioritization exercise for policy ideas (including a proposal for a youth council raised earlier by a councilmember), and a session to consult with emergency-management staff on a proposed handbook of protocols for emergencies and communications.
Kritzer noted logistical items for the event (food orders and dietary needs) and reminded the public that the council will not hold a regular business meeting the following week because members will travel to Olympia to meet legislators and advocate for city priorities. The council moved on to the next agenda item after the preview.
