Locust Valley trustees briefed on bus-garage hearing, completed locker-room work and upcoming roof and parking projects

The Board of Education received an update on several capital and facilities projects, including the completion of girls' locker-room, bleacher and lighting work and planning for a slate-roof replacement and parking-lot work.

A public hearing on the bus garage and gasoline tank was held; district officials said the project is awaiting Nassau County approval and would begin once county permission is granted. The district emphasized that the planned capital projects are funded from saved capital reserves and will not affect the May budget proposition for taxpayers.

Facilities director reports said all punch-list items for the girls' locker room, bleachers and lights have been completed. The BI slate roof replacement has been scheduled for the coming summer. Surveyors have finished preliminary work for a middle-school/high-school parking-lot project and the district expects architectural plans shortly; that work also is slated for summer.

Design work is under way with an architecture firm on the cafeteria and a middle/high-school library project; the district said the community would receive renderings at a March 4 meeting.

Board members and administrators stressed the projects were financed from district reserves and not through the annual budget proposition. "These projects are not an impact to our budget," a board member said during the update, noting the district had been "incredibly fiscally prudent" in saving for capital work.

No vote on capital spending was taken at the meeting; trustees were provided updates and timelines.
