Leonardtown — Council and staff used routine reports at the Feb. 10 Leonardtown Town Council meeting to update residents on local planning, utilities and small‑business activity in town.
Planning: Mike Bailey (planning staff) told the council the planning commission recommended approval of a tavern and one apartment building in Section 2 Phase 3 (the community building and an apartment building) but advised the council that the project cannot proceed immediately because education units (EDUs) are not currently available and the development still needs fire‑marshal and architectural approvals. Bailey said the planning commission’s recommendation is for council consideration when the outstanding technical and utility capacity issues are resolved.
Utilities and infrastructure: Town staff reported that the Meadows water tower construction is underway and that work appears ahead of schedule. Staff also said the Mac McIntosh pump station has been awaiting concrete components and that contractors expect to have it back online in March; staff characterized that timeline as contingent on completion of the remaining concrete structures.
Community projects and businesses: A scout (Tristan) described a project to build five picnic tables for the wharf; the tables would be financed partly through sponsorship plaques proposed at about $190 per plaque, with an estimated cost for five tables of about $800 (the scout and staff gave these cost figures during the discussion). Mark Guy of Guy Distributing and others thanked the town for hosting the Budweiser Clydesdales event in December and presented a certificate of appreciation for municipal staff assistance.
Leonardtown Business Association: Christy Parker, representing the Leonardtown Business Association, outlined the LBA’s 25th‑anniversary plans and promoted collaborative themed weekends beginning with a March event and an April community egg hunt. Parker asked businesses to post events on the Visit Leonardtown calendar to consolidate advertising.
Other notes: Corporal Roselle provided the police activity report for the prior period, noting 42 vehicle stops (the report was included in meeting materials). Council members also noted a recent ribbon cutting for T & J’s Cove and that new small businesses such as a cat café appear to be drawing patrons. One council member warned of ongoing problems with the Maryland Comptroller’s website affecting payroll and tax transactions and advised residents and local employers of potential state‑level processing issues.
These items were provided as informational updates; the council took the Cedar Lane resolution separately as a formal action during the meeting. No formal council votes or approvals were recorded in the transcript for the planning, utilities or business updates during this session.
