The Bernalillo County Board of County Commissioners appointed Josephine (Josie) Lopez to a vacancy on the joint city-county Air Quality Board on Feb. 11, voting 3-1.
Commissioner Frank Baca nominated Lopez and said he had reviewed her resume and past service on the Air Quality Board. Commissioner Benson nominated Jared Goetsch and asked Goetsch to introduce himself; Goetsch described his airspace and environmental work for Kirtland Air Force Base, his NEPA certification and his work on a base sustainability committee.
After public remarks and sponsor statements, the board voted. Chair Olivas, Commissioner Frank Baca and Commissioner Barbara Baca voted in favor of Lopez; Commissioner Benson voted for Goetsch. The motion to appoint Lopez carried 3-1.
Commissioners thanked both nominees for volunteering for the board. Commissioner Barbara Baca noted Lopez's South Valley background and experience as a teacher in the area and said that community perspective is important for the air-shed challenges often concentrated in the South Valley.
