Kyrene highlights teacher accomplishments, names Apprende Middle School an Arizona School to Watch and recognizes district super students

Superintendent Laura Tenas used the Feb. 11 governing board meeting to highlight staff and student achievements across the Kyrene Elementary District and to announce that Apprende Middle School is an inaugural Arizona "School to Watch." The meeting also included routine recognitions of individual "Kyrene super students."
Tenas told the board that six Kyrene teachers recently achieved National Board Certification and one teacher renewed a credential, bringing the districts total of National Board Certified Teachers to 25. She named the educators and district teacher facilitators called out in her remarks and congratulated them for the professional distinction.
Later, Dr. Robert Caplinger, state director for the Arizona Schools to Watch program, presented the Schools to Watch designation for Apprende Middle School, calling the campus "a model for other middle schools across Arizona" and noting the designation process evaluates academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structures. "A highlight of their evaluation report reads, Apprende Middle School provides a middle school program that demonstrates a strong commitment to innovative middle school practices," Caplinger said. He said Apprende will receive an official award at the National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C., in June and that Mountain America Credit Union provided a sponsorship check for the campus celebration.
The board also recognized individual Kyrene "super students" from multiple campuses; principals and nomination excerpts were read as students came forward to receive certificates and community-donor prizes (Sky Zone, Zekes Pizza, Jeremiah's Ice and the Kyrene Foundation). Examples included Nora Marshall (Kyrene de la Mirada Leadership Academy) and several students from Kyrene Traditional Academy who were named for leadership, collaboration, adaptability and problem-solving.
The recognition items were ceremonial and no board action was required.
