Kyrene board approves 56-member long-range planning committee to study facilities and possible override

The Kyrene Elementary District Governing Board voted 5-0 on Feb. 11 to approve 56 recommended members to a long-range planning committee charged with reviewing enrollment trends, facility utilization and whether to recommend a continuation of the districts maintenance and operations (M&O) override for the November ballot.

Executive Director Erin Helm told the board the committee was formed from nearly 100 applicants and balanced invited representatives (local government, business partners, education representatives) with parents, staff and community members. "The majority, are individuals who answered our call for applications," Helm said, and the membership was chosen to ensure geographic and demographic diversity.

Helm said the committee will have two primary purposes: (1) recommend a long-range facilities plan addressing projected enrollment and use of school buildings, and (2) make a recommendation on whether to call for a continuation of the M&O override in November. She said the committee will meet for several months; scheduled meetings run through July but additional meetings may be added. Two governing board members will participate on the committee as non-voting members to avoid conflicts should the board later consider committee recommendations.

Board members asked about timelines and public transparency. Helm said all committee meetings will be live-streamed and minutes posted on the district website; she noted the committees recommendation on an override would need to be delivered in time to meet election-calling deadlines for a November ballot (staff indicated May/June as a typical window for board action).

The board approved the slate by motion from Cedric Collins with a second from Vice President Trina Nelson; the vote was 5-0.
