Board approves personnel recommendations; names Chris Marshall new Alexander Central head football coach

The Alexander County Board of Education approved personnel recommendations on Feb. 10, and Superintendent Dr. Griffin announced the appointment of Chris Marshall as the new head football coach at Alexander Central High School.
Dr. Griffin explained the principal, Jacob Veil, convened a search committee that considered candidates from outside North Carolina and recommended Marshall, who has been on staff in various roles since about 2012 and is an alumnus of Alexander Central. Griffin praised the committee's work and said Marshall "will represent our county well." The board approved the personnel recommendations by voice vote after a motion from Vice Chairman Degenhardt and a second by Board Member Bowles; the motion carried unanimously.
Marshall addressed the board, saying, in part, "I'd like to start by thanking the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," and noted support from his family and wife. He said he did not plan this career path but feels "the best candidate for the job at the moment" and that his goal is to build a program "not just ... successful in terms of wins and losses, but a successful program for the kids and everything they do in the game of life." The board and superintendent offered congratulations and took photographs.
Dr. Griffin thanked outgoing Coach Carter for his service and said Marshall will be welcomed by the community.
