Alexander County Schools honor teachers, national board renewals and county spelling bee winners

The Alexander County Board of Education on Feb. 10 recognized teachers and students for professional and academic achievements, honoring an Exceptional Children educator of excellence, teachers who completed or renewed National Board Certification and two sixth-graders who will represent the county at the regional spelling bee.
Danita Dalrevis introduced the recognitions and described Jennifer Bass as "Alexander County's EC Educator of excellence," noting Bass has taught at Alexander Central High School since February 2012 and was chosen by peers for leadership, dedication and work supporting exceptional children. Dalrevis also introduced three teachers who recently completed National Board Certification — Risa Singh Cook, Annie Holler and Kimberly Brown — and four teachers who renewed their certification: Natalie Millsaps (not present), Heather Houston, Bridget Horn and Andrea Austin. Dalrevis said the candidates "completed their work in two years or fewer" and that Alexander County has 70 National Board–certified staff members.
The board also recognized the county spelling bee champion, sixth-grader Noah Wingler of West, and runner-up Daniel Costner of East Alexander Middle School. The board noted Noah will advance to the regional spelling bee at Bank of America Stadium on March 9.
The recognitions occupied the honors portion of the agenda and concluded before the board moved into business items.
