Hardin County court votes to apply for wildfire-protection planning grant

Hardin County Commissioners Court voted Feb. 11 to pursue grant funding to update the county's Community Wildfire Protection Plan, a step county officials said is recommended by the U.S. Forest Service and the county planning commission.
The court approved moving forward with a grant application limited to updating the protection plan; officials said the application under consideration would fund the plan update for about $250,000. The county's previous plan dates to February 2011 and commissioners said it needs refreshing to reflect current risk and mitigation priorities.
Judge Wayne McDaniel, presiding, opened the item and said staff and the planning commission had recommended proceeding. Commissioners said they would coordinate with Planning Commission member James Moore and local fire chiefs on plan development if funding is awarded. The court directed staff to seek input from fire chiefs and other stakeholders during plan preparation.
No formal decision was made at the meeting to apply for Community Wildfire Defense Grant implementation funds; commissioners said they would revisit the larger Community Wildfire Defense Grant next year and proceed now only with the plan update application.
The motion to authorize the grant application passed by voice vote.
