KIPP Texas discloses TEA intruder detection audit findings and reports district reunification drill

KIPP Texas reported that the Texas Education Agency has conducted 19 intruder detection audits at KIPP schools this school year and that three audits resulted in findings requiring corrective action.
Laura Howarth, chief operations officer, told the board TEA assigns corrective actions for identified deficiencies and that KIPP Texas schools receiving findings must retrain staff, create action plans and address any shortfalls. Howarth said the organization tracks audit results in the safety and security committee and will brief the board further in executive session with legal counsel present to address the audit findings and remediation steps.
Howarth also described a reunification exercise held in December that involved operations leaders across regions. Reunification — the process to reunite students with caregivers after a school emergency — is not regularly practiced at most schools to the degree staff believe is necessary. She said the December exercise focused on improving protocols for quickly and safely reuniting children with guardians; staff will provide additional details in closed session as appropriate.
No formal board action was taken in open session regarding the audits; staff said they will report remediation progress to the board under the safety and security committee schedule.
