St. Charles students’ Safety Quest app wins 2024 congressional app challenge; invited to House of Code festival

Two St. Charles students were honored Feb. 10 after their app, Safety Quest, won the 2024 congressional app challenge for Illinois’ 8th District and earned an invitation to showcase at the House of Code festival in Washington, D.C., in April.
Superintendent Dr. Gordon introduced the recognition and invited Mr. Richter to present the students. Mr. Richter said the students, guided by their faculty advisor, Mrs. Shue, developed Safety Quest to teach young children how to identify and respond to emergencies.
The students told the board their research informed the app’s focus. According to the students, “about 91% of students in our community, younger kids, didn't know how to identify an emergency in the first place,” and their data showed roughly “80, 81, 81 percent of parents … aren't able to accurately … administer first aid or identify or properly respond in emergencies.” The students said they built Safety Quest as “a fun and engaging game that teaches the same skills to kids in a more fun and engaging way.”
Dr. Gordon and Mr. Richter framed the recognition as a district celebration of student work in STEM and computer science. The board did not take formal action on the recognition; it was presented as part of the superintendent’s report.
What’s next: the students will travel to Washington, D.C., in April to present at the House of Code festival, per the presentation at the Feb. 10 meeting.
