Prater's Mill Foundation seeks continued lease role as county moves to park conversion

Lynn Cabe, president of the Prater's Mill Foundation, presented the foundation's 2024 annual report to the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 and requested a meeting with county officials to renegotiate and continue the foundation's lease if the site becomes a county park.
Cabe summarized the foundation's 2024 work: revising mission and goals, paying site utilities totaling about $3,900, maintaining general liability insurance (and special-event insurance when needed), and managing a mix of private and public events that increased site foot traffic. She said the foundation had curated nature-trail activities, river cleanups and heritage tours and is planning an Earth Day event on April 19, 2025.
The foundation said it is rehabilitating the historic Prater House to serve as a professional office and prioritizing archives curation and exhibit development. Cabe said the Bandy Heritage Center is supporting archival and interpretive efforts.
The foundation asked to meet county officials soon to renegotiate its lease and reiterated its desire to continue stewardship of the Prater's Mill historic site when the county transitions the property to a park.
