County approves Knox key-storage units and Motorola radios for emergency services

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 approved two emergency-services purchases: Knox secure key boxes for fire apparatus and a set of replacement radios for first responders under a discounted Motorola contract.
Commissioners approved a purchase of Knox key-storage units to be installed for multi-family and commercial buildings to give firefighters secure access to keys; the purchase and associated software was $24,009.89 and will be funded from SPLOST 2020. Commissioners discussed that developers or building owners typically must install a corresponding box on a building so keys are available for use with the units.
The board also approved purchasing radios through Motorola, taking advantage of an additional 12% discount off the state contract. The county will buy an initial batch of 20 radios (total approximately $116,000) and plans to allocate additional radios from SPLOST 2024 funds for remaining needs. Commissioners said many of the county's current radios are out of warranty and difficult to repair.
Both purchases were approved on 4–0 votes in the transcript.
