The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 10 to approve a School Resource Officer (SRO) agreement with the Sheriff's Office that expands SRO coverage across county schools.
County staff said the agreement covers a total of 24 SROs, adds a detective and safety personnel, and provides DARE instruction. The school system will pay $350 per day per SRO when school is in session; when officers are on paid time off or during summer months the county must cover the cost. County staff estimated the county's net additional annual cost at roughly $250,000 beginning next fiscal year.
The board ratified the Sheriff's Office earlier purchase of an F-150 for chief deputies financed from the 2020 SPLOST program and approved the SRO agreement in one vote. Commissioners said SROs who are not needed for school duties during breaks will be reassigned to other duties rather than sent home.
