Whitfield County approves public-works contracts, SPLOST vehicle purchases and insurance reimbursements

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 approved a set of public-works contracts, purchases of vehicles funded by SPLOST and accepted an insurance reimbursement for a damaged county storage building.
The board approved annual contracts for road striping and crushed stone used in paving projects, and accepted primary and backup vendors for tandem dump truck services. Commissioners also approved multiple SPLOST-funded vehicle purchases, including dump trucks, service trucks and two Ford F-150s for new hires, and ratified a $40,000 insurance reimbursement to repair a Public Works storage building.
The striping contract and crushed-stone contract were described as annual renewals at similar amounts to the prior year; the county is also acquiring a striping truck expected later in 2025 that will reduce reliance on outside striping contracts. For tandem-haul services the board approved Tunnel Express as primary and Wheat Trucking as a backup vendor; both were offered at the same price, the board said.
The board voted to approve three SPLOST line items for public-works equipment — five dump trucks, a service truck and a striping unit — and separately approved two additional F-150 pickups for new hires funded from SPLOST. All votes on these items were recorded as passing on 4–0 tallies.
Commissioners moved and approved the ratification of the $40,000 insurance reimbursement; staff said internal crews would perform the storage-building repairs where possible. The board also ratified earlier use of grant funds to address an emergency at the regional food bank and later accepted incoming grant reimbursements tied to that work.
Actions recorded in the meeting show motions and seconders for each vote; where recorded in the transcript a motion maker and a second were named, and outcomes were recorded as unanimous 4–0 approvals.
Meeting materials distributed in advance included bid documents and SPLOST procurement lists; staff noted delivery lead times for larger equipment, including a 5–6 month wait for the striping unit.
