Council grants liquor approvals for Venue 522, Hillcrest and Sandhills event center with conditions

The Lincoln City Council on Feb. 10 granted conditional approval for a liquor license for Venue 522 LLC and approved manager applications for Hillcrest Country Club and Sandhills Global Event Center.
Council heard from Derek Zimmerman, attorney for the applicant, and Craig Grama, representing Venue 522, about a proposed class IK liquor license for a multi-event space at 1525 Yankee Hill Road. Zimmerman told the council the property sits within land associated with Wilderness Ridge Golf Course and is zoned R-3 residential, which triggers a distance requirement under current zoning. He said a city text amendment that will be considered by the Planning Commission on Feb. 19 is expected to resolve that technical zoning issue and asked the council for conditional approval subject to the Planning Commission action. David Carey, director of the Planning Department, said staff agrees the text amendment will address the conflict and that the item should return to council in March.
The council moved for conditional approval of items 4A and 4B (Venue 522 application and manager application) “based on the actions of the Planning Commission.” The motion passed 7–0.
Separately, the council approved two manager applications by voice vote. Yao Amaganji introduced himself as assistant general manager at Hillcrest Country Club and answered council questions about his tenure; the council voted to approve the manager application for Hillcrest. The council also approved a manager change for Lancaster County Agricultural Society Inc., doing business as Sandhills Global Event Center; Ronald (Ron) Bahati said he is completing required training and provided his contact/address information to the clerk.
All motions related to these items carried unanimously, with no public opposition recorded during the hearings.
The approvals are subject to any outstanding licensing processes at the state level and the city’s subsequent licensing steps; Venue 522’s full liquor license remains contingent on resolution of the zoning technicality and the separate liquor-licensing process.
