Superintendent reports slight enrollment dip and gains in graduation rates; district recognizes student and community achievements

Superintendent Dr. Libby told the Sweetwater County School District #1 board that as of the February report the district had 4,966 students enrolled, a drop of six students from the semester start. He said pre-K enrollment was 99 students.
Libby highlighted graduation-rate gains. He said Black Butte High School’s graduation rate rose by 13.1 percentage points to 88.9 percent year-over-year, which the superintendent attributed to staff and program efforts at that school. Rock Springs High School’s rate increased slightly to 97.1 percent, and Farson maintained its graduation percentage. The districtwide graduation rate increased to 80.2 percent and the overall cohort rate was 81.6 percent.
Libby said the state calculates graduation rates using a weighting method that gives schools different weights based on grade-level cohorts, and he singled out ninth-grade transition as an ongoing focus for improvement.
The meeting included multiple recognitions and community donations: a $5,975 contribution from Fremont Motors to support school lunches for students in need; awards and program recognitions for music, theater and athletics participants; and individual acknowledgments for teachers and staff who had taken part in district initiatives such as Beyond Textbooks and Trout in the Classroom.
Ending: The superintendent said district supports and services for students had increased and that staff would continue focusing on ninth-grade transition and other improvement efforts. Several trustees and staff encouraged the community to celebrate and publicize school achievements.
