The Vermillion School District 13-1 Board of Education adopted the 2025–26 school calendar at its Feb. 10 meeting, setting a student start date of Aug. 20 and an end date of May 20.
Dr. Elvey, superintendent, said administrators and staff recommended moving one fall in-service day to the end of the school year to allow for a data-focused professional learning day. The recommended calendar preserves an Aug. 13–14 in-service block for staff, an Aug. 19 report/orientation day and a student start date of Aug. 20. The revised calendar also returns to the district’s practice of taking the first full two weeks of the winter break.
Dr. Elvey said the calendar changes were driven by staff feedback to reduce the number of four-day weeks in the first nine-week period and to offer a meaningful end-of-year staff day. The administration recommended the board adopt the calendar as final and said a tentative mirror calendar for 2026–27 would be posted to give families longer-term notice.
A board member noted an in-service day would fall on Halloween that year and said teachers would likely appreciate not needing to work the following day; other board members agreed. The board voted to approve items a through g — a bundled motion that included the calendar adoption. The motion was moved by Mark (board member) and seconded by Carol (board member); the voice vote passed.
Ending: The district said it would post the approved calendar on its website.
