Oakwood Schools Foundation awards $5,800 through Philanthropy 101, opens special spring grant cycle

Emma Butler, a trustee of the Oakwood Schools Foundation, presented the foundation’s Philanthropy 101 awards and reported grant activity at the February Oakwood City School Board meeting.
Butler said the foundation awarded $5,800 this year to four organizations chosen by Oakwood High School Wall Street 101 students. The organizations were God’s Grace Food Bank, Bridget’s Path, Shoes for the Shoeless, and BOG Ministries. “Students in the BOG Ministries group … earned the top award this year, which was an $1,800 gift from OSF to BOG,” Butler said.
Butler also reported on the foundation’s winter grant cycle. Partner groups including the Oakwood Fine Arts boosters and parent‑teacher organizations funded four grants this winter totaling $4,390. The funded items include a keyboard for the orchestra room, tripods at the junior/senior high, a new bench for the library courtyard, and pickleball rackets for after‑school teacher bonding at Smith Elementary.
Because those partners’ funding left a surplus, the foundation is running a special spring grant cycle. Butler said the spring cycle will accept applications through April 7 with the intent to release funding before the May board meeting; preference will be given to projects that can prepare over the summer and be implemented in fall. Butler also noted the Oakwood Arts Gala will take place March 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium.
Butler’s remarks were presented as a foundation update and did not request new district funds. Mike Zimmerman and Wall Street 101 students joined the presentation onstage to present a ceremonial check to BOG Ministries.
