Shanita Woods, principal of Higgins Middle School, presented the school's Schools At Risk (SARS) monthly update at the Feb. 3 work session, reporting assessment, attendance and discipline data.
Woods said the school's second benchmark assessment showed 38.5 percent proficiency in reading, with growth-for-all at 55.7 percent and growth-for-bottom-25 at 57.1 percent. In math the school reported 42 percent proficiency with growth-for-all at 52.2 percent and growth-for-bottom-25 at 38.8 percent. Science proficiency was 57.3 percent and participation in the assessment was 98 percent.
For the reporting month of January the school reported 286 students enrolled, 90.2 percent average daily attendance, 30.99 percent of students with two or more absences, 83 percent teacher attendance and 28 discipline referrals (two from bus incidents). Woods cited total 2024 fiscal-year allocations of $106,966 (noted as up from a prior year allocation of $201,000 in the presentation; board members did not further reconcile that figure in the meeting).
Ending: Board members had no further questions at the time; the principal concluded the monthly SARS update and staff moved on to the next agenda item.
