Commission accepts park-naming application for future park near lake; no recommendation given
Summary
Staff submitted an application to name proposed park at the north side of the lake (referred to as Peterson Park); commissioners reviewed process and asked for more information about adjacent development and trail placement. No formal recommendation was sent to council at this meeting.
Zach (staff) told the commission it has an application to consider a park name for land the city owns in a limited parcel on the south side of a lake and for additional property the city expects to receive as nearby development proceeds. Staff said the park is not yet publicly accessible and that naming requires at least a three-meeting review; the Parks Commission makes a recommendation that the City Council then finalizes by resolution.
Commissioners asked whether the site was part of the Michael’s Point area and about the pending development to the north of the lake. Zach said the north side of the lake is the likely location for the future park and that a development is pending in the next year or two; he noted the city currently owns a small slice of property on the south side. Commissioners also discussed letters received from developers (one from Pulte), and Zach said multiple developers may be involved and that the planning commission recently reviewed the related development packet and public comments about trails adjacent to private property.
A commissioner noted the city has previously named multi-person parks and that naming decisions tend to be long-lasting; staff cited Denzer Park as an example (officially Jack and Marley's Denzer Park) and other recent namings.
No motion to deny or recommend the proposed name was made; staff said it will bring additional information back at the next meeting for further review. The commission did not send a recommendation to council at this session.
