Board approves EV‑charging policy for Heritage Elementary, will charge public per state law

The Waunakee Community School District Board of Education approved a new policy to manage electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations installed at Heritage Elementary School.
According to staff, the policy reflects a 2024 state law requiring public entities to charge the public for EV charging in public facilities; district use for official purposes would be exempt from fees. The chargers will be available to staff and visiting members of the public during specified hours in the policy. A software payment system accompanying the chargers will require users to set up accounts and pay by credit card; the district would set rates to cover electricity and a small administrative fee.
Policy committee members told the board the policy will be piloted and reviewed for revisions after initial implementation. Barry Forbes, identified in committee material as a WASB policy drafter, reviewed the state law language with district staff during committee discussion.
Board members voted to approve the EV‑charging policy as presented; the motion was approved by voice vote.
