The Waunakee Community School District Board on Monday approved a new policy establishing hours, payment and usage rules for electric‑vehicle chargers recently installed at Heritage Elementary School.

Under the policy, chargers used for district vehicles or district business will remain free; public and staff use of the front‑lot chargers will require payment through the vendor’s account system. The software that runs the chargers will allow users to create an account and pay, and will report usage and apply a rate that covers the district’s cost plus a small administrative fee, officials said.
Policy language also sets operating hours for public charging and directs staff to put the new rules in place, test them and return to the policy committee if revisions are needed. The board approved the policy by voice vote after a short staff presentation.
Why it matters: The decision implements state statutory requirements for public EV chargers and creates a local revenue pathway intended to offset operational costs. Administrators said the district will monitor use and adjust hours or rates if necessary.
