Library gets $100,000 planning-and-design grant for East Springfield branch; state aid also confirmed

The Springfield Finance Committee on Feb. 10 reviewed a $100,000 planning-and-design grant awarded to the library to support renovation and an addition to the East Springfield branch.
Molly, the city’s library director, told the committee the grant will fund a yearlong planning-and-design phase to hire architects and produce cost estimates. The library expects to provide design documents and cost estimates to the city and then seek construction funding; Molly estimated (subject to design and approvals) that construction could begin as early as late 2027 and more likely in 2028.
Molly also reported on state aid to public libraries. The city received a first payment of about $306,000 under the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ state-aid formula and expects a second payment in April; library staff said the funds offset personnel costs, support programming, purchases and staff development.
