Board hears updates on Commonwealth Governor's School, ATI lab program and special education supports

Dr. Boyd reported that CGS generally has 20 slots for the incoming freshman class; for the 2025–26 year the division had 21 applicants and 21 freshmen currently enrolled in CGS. “How many slots did we have for the 25–26 school year? 20 students from the freshman class. So we have 20 slots every year for CGS. How many applicants did we receive this year? We received 21 applicants,” Dr. Boyd said. He said selections will be made after testing and interviews and that timing for announcements could be in February or March, noting absences and weather-related testing disruptions.
Board members who visited the ATI lab school reported favorable impressions of student engagement in robotics, polymers and other hands-on activities and noted that grant funding that supported start-up will evolve over the next few years. At the ATI site visit, board members said student engagement appeared high and that the school will scale to more grades in future years.
The special education advisory committee (CEAC) reported on a parent-education resource organization that will help parents understand Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and access services. Committee members said a parent resource night is planned and that statewide resources are available to support families; the committee highlighted the parent training center as a point of contact for parents with questions about special education services.
Board members requested outreach to expand CGS awareness for underrepresented students and asked for follow-up data on application counts versus available slots for future meetings.
