Superintendent asks board to consider quick special meeting as county budget timeline tightens; job fair and Virtual Virginia sessions scheduled

Superintendent Dr. Boyd told the King George County School Board that county budget timing may require a brief special meeting to approve the division’s initial budget before the county administrator presents his proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors.
“We may need an opportunity to have a really quick special meeting, probably sometime during the week of the 17th,” Dr. Boyd said, explaining that County Administrator Mr. Smolnick intends to present his budget to the board of supervisors on March 4. The superintendent said the board’s next regular meeting is March 3 but that approving the division’s budget one day before the county presentation would leave little time for packet distribution and review.
Dr. Boyd also announced division operations and family-facing items: the annual King George County Schools job fair will be March 1; a Virtual Virginia information session for middle-school families was rescheduled to Feb. 18 because of weather; and the division is monitoring a winter storm that has closed schools and could require use of virtual instructional days or adjustments to the third- and fourth-quarter calendars.
“We may need to start having conversations about instructional time,” Dr. Boyd said, noting some divisions have used virtual days in lieu of traditional snow days. He asked the board to review items during the meeting’s budget work session and said staff would return with edits before scheduling any special meeting to approve the budget for transmission to county staff.
No formal board vote was taken on a special meeting date at the session; members agreed to proceed with tonight’s budget work and to decide whether to schedule a special meeting after considering requested edits.
