Health department renovation: commissioners told basement restroom ventilation route meets prior code; future HVAC update optional

Amelie Marcher, health department administrator, updated the Coffey County commissioners on Jan. 21 about renovation work in the county health department.
Lede/nut graf: Marcher told the commission that drywall for phase 2 was complete and painting and ceiling-grid work were underway; flooring installation was scheduled for the week following the meeting. A pending issue in a lower-level restroom involved whether restroom exhaust met the 2024 building code.
Marcher said BG Consultants reviewed the situation and determined the original 2009 HVAC renovation complied with the code adopted at that time. BG recommended proceeding with finishing the renovation; the project team will route an exhaust connection from the health department restroom to the lower-level restroom to meet current ventilation requirements. "It was found that the restroom in the lower level ... was just recirculating in the aeroplenum. So according to the 2024 code that wasn't up to date, so BG Consultants had requested that we filled out an acknowledgment letter stating that it wasn't up to code," Marcher said. After additional review, she said, "they stated that they can go ahead and proceed with finishing that out, and so we don't have to do, like, send the acknowledgment letter or anything like that."
Marcher said routing the exhaust is proceeding as part of finishing the phase and that the county may later choose to commission a separate HVAC scope to bring the whole building to the 2024 code if it wishes; BG Consultants has solicited cost estimates from mechanical subcontractors to provide a budget if the county decides to pursue a full HVAC upgrade.
The project team reported the renovation was running slightly ahead of schedule and that a punch-list walkthrough could happen "the week of the 3rd," with the expectation of finalizing outstanding items shortly afterward.
Ending: Commissioners asked for BG Consultants to be available to explain options if the county wanted to discuss a broader HVAC upgrade; Marcher said the contractor will finish the phase work and that staff will present any further HVAC-cost options to the board for a separate decision.
