Local veterans groups announce scholarship fundraiser, Relay For Life activities and peer support meetings

Several veterans organizations used the Feb. 11 Laredo Veterans Advisory Council meeting to announce upcoming fundraisers and community events.
Francisco Rivas, speaking for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said the VFW is organizing a bowling tournament fundraiser for the STARS Scholarship Fund."The only 1 we are currently working on is, a bowling tournament, bowling fund fundraiser for, the STARS Scholastic STARS Scholarship Fund. It's gonna be held March 30 at, Playmore. It's about $200 a lane for for those organizations wishing to to participate and help out in this scholarship fundraiser," Rivas said.
Maxine Travellas, president of the Black Widows, said her group is still raising funds for Relay For Life and urged veterans and community members to form teams. She said the Black Widows will host a peer support "cafe" starting Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. for women veterans and invited the public to attend: "We're trying to give you guys an outlet yet to vent. You don't have to talk to yourself and your 4 walls or your dog because they might be tired of you."
Travellas also said Congresswoman Crockett is organizing a "Know Your Rights" session for undocumented veterans; the Black Widows planned a watch party for Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. for those who want to attend locally.
Speakers asked council members and veterans groups to sign up teams and to share sponsorship letters; no budgets beyond the $200 per lane fundraising request were detailed in the meeting transcript.
