Vietnam "Wall That Heals" to visit Laredo April 3–6; city seeks volunteers for ceremonies

Ruby Miranda, who said she is leading the ceremonies committee for the event, told the council: "It is currently going to be at the Uni Trade Stadium. It will arrive April 1, and it'll leave April 6. But the actual when it will be open to the public will be from April 3 to the sixth." The city has scheduled a ceremonies committee meeting for 7 p.m. tomorrow at 619 Reynolds, the environment services office, Miranda said.
Why it matters: The Wall That Heals displays names of service members who died in the Vietnam War. Organizers said the visit is intended as a public commemoration and an educational opportunity for schools and veterans’ families.
Council members and veterans also discussed an "in‑memory" program that will allow families to submit names of veterans who died after the war from service‑related complications. Commander Gomez, representing American Arturo T. Benavides Memorial Post 59, said: "The application needs to be submitted by the March 2 to be able to be placed on an opening night." Gomez urged veterans’ groups to help collect names and participate in ceremonies.
A city staff member said Laredo is one of 30 cities approved to host the exhibit after more than 40 applied. Organizers also said the display will include educational tours during the days it is present; the city will publish the schedule once finalized.
Organizers asked veterans‑group leaders and other volunteers to join the ceremonies committee to help plan the program, logistics and school or community visits while the exhibit is in Laredo. Miranda said she has a program booklet and contact information to distribute at the committee meeting.
The council heard additional logistics comments from veterans about transporting the display to schools and using a trailer for short visits; organizers said routing and pickup times are still being finalized.
The ceremonies committee meeting at 7 p.m. at 619 Reynolds was the primary next step described at the Feb. 11 meeting; Miranda and veterans urged anyone with information for the in‑memory booklet to bring applications to that meeting.
