Alpharetta staff report garden programs, greenhouse delays and spring plant events

City community agriculture staff reported progress on a range of spring programs and a construction delay for a municipal greenhouse during the Recreation Commission meeting.
Amanda, who presented the Community Agriculture & Sustainability Services Division report, said greenhouse construction remains incomplete because multiple sets of plans and pieces arrived mismatched; crews now have matching plans and pieces but rain has delayed final assembly. Amanda said she was hopeful the greenhouse would be finished by the end of the week but made no firm completion commitment.
Amanda announced that five schools have already signed up for the school garden support program and the first participating classroom will hatch chicks as part of a first-grade project. Staff also confirmed the first plant and seed pickup is scheduled to begin February 21 and run on a rolling seven-day pickup window; a second pickup and the large Garden Fair and plant sale will run April 12–20 in The Grove with partners the North Fulton Master Gardeners and the Georgia Native Plant Society.
Amanda highlighted the Think Globally, Plant Locally grant that helps residents certify yards with the National Wildlife Federation as pollinator gardens; eight houses had signed up at the time of the report and staff said remaining spots were expected to fill before the deadline. She also noted that the farmers market will accept SNAP this year and that staff provided a press release and FAQ in the meeting packet.
Commissioners and staff discussed volunteer survey results for the Old Rucker Farm volunteer program; Amanda said responses were overwhelmingly positive and that packet materials include raw Google Doc percentages of responses. The commission asked where to find pollinator garden certification criteria; Amanda said the criteria are posted on the community agriculture web page under the community tab.
The presentation included a staff request to coordinate outreach for the upcoming events; Morgan and others discussed sharing the event calendar on city social media.
