Commissioner thanks volunteers, discusses adding Sheriff's Office position funded by salary savings

Commissioner (unnamed) used his allotted Commissioner’s Time to recognize boards and commissions volunteers and to relay a staffing proposal described earlier by Sheriff’s Office leadership.

He thanked volunteers for their service and encouraged residents to consider serving on county boards and commissions, saying their input “does help with our decision making process.” The commissioner also extended regrets to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad for a missed installation and congratulated newly installed line officers and auxiliary members.

The commissioner cited a presentation by Captain Moses — given earlier in the meeting — that included a proposal to add a new member to the Sheriff’s Office funded through salary savings. The commissioner described the example as part of several county agencies working together, saying the county’s “lean” structure lets agencies “work to accomplish the mission quicker” because there is less internal bureaucracy and staff can coordinate directly with commissioners.

The remarks mixed appreciation for volunteers — which the commissioner said provide “an invaluable service” — with a procedural note about staffing: the Captain’s presentation proposed using salary savings to add personnel rather than seeking new recurring budget authority. The commissioner did not state that the board approved a hiring action; he framed the matter as part of a presentation and interagency cooperation discussed at the meeting.

He also thanked John Houser for stepping in during a presentation and noted a county resident named Diane was recovering from a torn meniscus.

The commissioner closed his remarks by encouraging safe conduct if snow occurs and by reiterating thanks to volunteers and staff.
